What is Nutritional Balancing?
Detoxify & Restore
Nutritional Balancing is a nutrition program that heals many ailments naturally, without drugs. NB is more like a life path than it is a method of healing. By following this path, healing of the body and development of the mind occur. NB is a total healing system that makes use of both Western medical science and various Eastern healing sciences. It also uses principles of modern physics and engineering. The creator, Dr. Paul Eck, found ways to apply these concepts in developing NB. He achieved a way to balance body chemistry correctly and continuously, allowing the body to slowly rebuild and restore its enzyme systems.
For the deepest healing to occur safely and quickly, NB requires that one strictly follow certain rules and principles. It may require more discipline than some people have, although once a person adopts the diet and lifestyle, it is not a difficult routine to follow.
It is important to understand that the disease process basically involves: 1) Slowing of the oxidation rate; 2) Reduced oxygenation and hydration of the tissues; 3) Clogging of the system with toxins of all kinds; and 4) ‘Rusting’ or buildup of oxides in the body. The oxides cause oxidant damage.
Healing consists of reversing the disease process: 1) Removing the oxides, infections and other toxins; 2) Restoring the body’s oxidation reactions; 3) Restoring oxygenation and hydration; and 4) Balancing the oxidation rate. Balancing the oxidation rate is often slow and difficult because it requires restoring the activity of millions of enzymes throughout the body.
The focus of NB is on whole system healing. This is the only way to heal the body at the deepest level. Healing only the digestive tract, the kidneys, or the cardiovascular system, for example, generally misses the mark for complete healing. Our current medical paradigm often views a human body as a collection of somewhat unrelated parts. Medical specialties are then organized around body parts such as the kidneys, the heart or the lungs. This kind of focus is needed for the targeting of prescription drugs and specialized surgeries. It works best for surgical cases and some infections. However this approach misses many subtle connections that occur in the complex system of the body.
A newer paradigm of health and healing emerging in the 21st century views the body as one complex, self-regulating WHOLE system. Reflecting this newer paradigm, NB’s emphasis is on creating balance and vitality, rather than on diagnosis and symptom removal. It is preventive and predictive, focusing on wellness rather than diagnosis. It is a safe approach.
NB uses hair samples to obtain a reading of the overall stress pattern of your body. Hair tissue mineral analysis or HTMA is a soft tissue mineral biopsy that uses hair as the sampling tissue. A biopsy is an analysis of a body tissue. Hair is considered a soft tissue, and hence hair analysis is a soft tissue biopsy. The test measures the levels of 20 or more minerals in the hair with an accuracy of plus or minus about 3%. This is about the same level of accuracy as most blood tests, or a little better.
In order to insure accuracy of the water-soluble elements, the hair sample must not be washed at the hair testing laboratory. The preparation of the hair sample at the laboratory is a debate that exists among the laboratories that offer hair mineral testing. Most laboratories, unfortunately, wash the hair with powerful detergents and toxic solvents such as acetone or alcohol. The laboratory I use, Analytical Research Labs (ARL), is the only laboratory in the United States that does not wash the hair sample. So more accuracy and detail in the readings can be obtained.

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis
A Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)reveals a unique metabolic profile that cannot be seen through other tests. Hair cells can ‘lock’ in information about your exposure to certain nutrients. As your hair grows it forms a permanent record showing what deficiencies and excesses have been building up in your body during the period of hair growth.
Clinical research indicates that hair levels of specific elements, particularly toxic elements such as cadmium, mercury, lead, and arsenic, are highly correlated with pathological disorders. Symptoms of excess toxic metals can include: fatigue, constipation, insomnia, brain fog, emotional disturbances, and learning disabilities to name a few. In our technological society, heavy metal toxicity is not at all uncommon.
Many elements are essential to life, assisting in the production of energy and other important biochemical processes, particularly enzyme reactions. Deficiencies or imbalances among elements lead to health problems.
Some conditions associated with mineral imbalances and toxic metals:
Depression, Anxiety and other mental health disorders
Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
High Blood Pressure
Arthritis
Anemia
Thyroid disturbances
Adrenal disturbances
Digestive disorders
Kidney dysfunction
Heart arrhythmia and other cardiovascular diseases
Allergies
Why Test For Minerals?
Minerals are the “spark plugs” of life. They are involved in almost all enzyme reactions in the body.
Without enzyme activity, life does not exist. The foundation of health lies in ideal mineral ratios and adequate mineral intake. Anything else you do for your health is great, but minerals must be the foundation and priority. Once those are balanced and replenished, it solves the majority of health issues people attempt in vain to correct by other means.
Balancing minerals with a hair tissue mineral analysis is imperative to achieve proper mineral ratios. All minerals have a complex interaction and affect each other. Excess intake of a single mineral can decrease the intestinal absorption of another mineral. For example, a high intake of calcium depresses intestinal zinc absorption, while an excess intake of zinc can depress copper absorption. It is evident that a loss of homeostatic equilibrium between nutrients has an adverse effect upon health.
Dr. Paul Eck & Dr. Lawrence Wilson Bios
Nutritional Balancing is the brilliant work of Dr. Paul Eck (1925-1996) who was a physician and mineral researcher and is considered an authority on trace minerals. In the 1970’s, he came across a new assessment method of hair tissue mineral analysis. Through painstaking research as well as hundreds of thousands of hair mineral analyses, he correlated medical diagnosis with mineral levels. He further discovered that the ratios among minerals were equally important and that there were certain patterns on the chart that related to a person’s state of mind. Dr. Eck determined ideal mineral levels and ratios necessary for the body to be balanced. He included work from other brilliant physicians such as Dr. George Watson, Ph.D. (1912-), Dr. Melvin Page, DDS (1884-1983) and Dr. Hans Selye, M.D. (1907-1983) to develop the Nutritional Balancing Program.
Dr. Lawrence Wilson, M.D., who worked with Dr. Eck for 14 years, continues his research and work. Over the last thirty years, he has discovered additional mineral patterns and their meaning that are not part of Dr. Eck’s original work. He has also added additional healing modalities to complement Dr. Eck’s original findings. Dr. Wilson personally reviews all hair mineral results and programs of all clients on a Nutritional Balancing Program to ensure that the program is correctly implemented and true to Dr. Eck’s work.
“Minerals are the basis of all life on this planet. Every cell depends on minerals for structure and function.”
